U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will visit Armenia on May 26, Armenian state media reported, citing the country’s Foreign Ministry.

Rubio is scheduled to meet Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan in Yerevan. The two officials are expected to make statements to the press after the talks. Bilateral documents are also expected to be signed, though their content has not yet been disclosed.

The visit comes at a sensitive moment for the South Caucasus. Armenia has been deepening its contacts with Washington and Brussels while its relations with Moscow have become increasingly strained.

Russia has accused Armenia of being pulled into what it called the European Union’s “anti-Russian orbit,” reflecting the widening gap between Yerevan and its former security patron.

For Armenia, Rubio’s visit is more than a diplomatic protocol stop. It signals continued U.S. interest in Yerevan’s foreign policy shift, regional connectivity, and the future security architecture of the South Caucasus.

The trip will also be closely watched in Baku. Any new U.S.-Armenia arrangement is likely to be viewed through the lens of the Azerbaijan-Armenia peace process, regional transport routes and the broader contest for influence involving the United States, Russia, Turkey, Iran and the European Union.

Mirzoyan and Rubio met earlier this year in Washington, where they announced the publication of the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity implementation framework, a document linked to commitments made at the White House in 2025.

The key question now is whether the documents to be signed in Yerevan will be mostly technical, or whether they will mark a more political step in the expanding U.S.-Armenia relationship.
