Azerbaijan will introduce new specialties at the bachelor’s and master’s levels starting from the 2026/2027 academic year.

Two new bachelor’s specialties will be launched: real estate management and software engineering. At the master’s level, 42 new specialties and specializations will be created.

At Baku State University, new master’s programs will include public relations, artificial intelligence, clinical social work and other fields.

The new programs cover social sciences and humanities, natural sciences, engineering, information technology, ecology, law and management.

Officials say the specialties were selected with the country’s socio-economic development priorities, state programs and emerging global labor market trends in mind.

The new specializations include artificial intelligence, cryptology, bioinformatics, microelectronics and nanoelectronics, photonics and optics, pharmaceutical chemistry, food chemistry, climate change adaptation, environmental management, political analytics and strategic studies, public policy and governance, strategic management, and online and multimedia journalism.

Students have generally welcomed the creation of new specialties, though some say that in fields such as IT, practical skills can matter as much as formal education.

Education expert Sabuhi Abdullayev said the new programs were created in response to the demands of the time and the needs of the labor market.

He said demand is expected to be particularly strong for real estate management and software engineering.

According to Abdullayev, Azerbaijan still has hundreds of thousands of undocumented homes, and specialists will be needed to help formalize, digitize and integrate them into electronic systems using modern technologies.

Speaking about software engineering, he said the field is no longer limited to traditional programming. It increasingly involves the development of software solutions integrated with artificial intelligence.

Abdullayev said the new specialties are among the priority areas and may offer graduates stronger employment prospects.

He added that the 42 new master’s specializations will help train more specialized and competitive professionals, while strengthening the link between higher education and the changing demands of the labor market.
