Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said Yerevan does not consider it necessary to respond to the Israeli government’s decision to recognize the Armenian genocide in the Ottoman Empire.

Speaking to journalists on Monday, Pashinyan said Armenia does not want the issue to be turned into a political weapon.

“We see no need to respond, because we believe that entering into the topic of turning the Armenian genocide into a weapon does not serve Armenia’s interests. Therefore, there is no need for a reaction,” Pashinyan said.

The Israeli government on Sunday approved a resolution to officially recognize the Armenian genocide. The initiative was submitted by Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar. After approval by the cabinet, the resolution is expected to be submitted to the Knesset for consideration.

Turkey sharply criticized the Israeli move, describing it as a political decision linked to the situation in Gaza.

“The Israeli government is seeking to hide its own crimes by adopting a political decision on the events of 1915,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry said, adding that the decision ignores historical and legal facts.

Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry also called on Israel to reconsider the decision, saying that historical issues should not be used for political purposes.

Turkey does not recognize the events of 1915 as genocide and has long argued that the issue should be addressed by historians rather than through political resolutions.

Russia’s State Duma recognized the events as genocide in 1995, adopting a resolution condemning what it described as the genocide of Armenians in 1915-1922.
