A labor pension in Azerbaijan may be recalculated if a retiree later submits documents confirming employment history or social insurance periods that were not included in the original assessment.
The issue was highlighted by the case of Mubariz Majidov, a resident of Azerbaijan’s Ujar district. Majidov said he was granted the minimum pension of 220 manats, or about $129, despite having 27 years of documented employment.
He said his years of work as a chief mechanic had not been fully reflected in the calculation.
One of the most common problems affects people who worked before Azerbaijan introduced its electronic employment and social insurance records. Information about those years may be missing from the digital system used to calculate pensions automatically.
Safar Mehdiyev, deputy chairman of the State Social Protection Fund, said pensions are calculated based on the pension capital recorded in a person’s individual account, social insurance history and other legal criteria.
When additional documents confirming employment or insurance periods are submitted, the authorities examine the information. If there are legal grounds, the pension is recalculated.
Lawyer Mushfig Habibli said citizens also take disputes over unrecorded employment history or pension capital to court. In many cases, the issue can be resolved through legal proceedings.
A pensioner who believes their payment was calculated incorrectly should first submit a written application to the State Social Protection Fund. The application should include copies of employment records, archive certificates and other documents supporting the claim.
The fund said Majidov’s case is currently under review and that the result is expected to be announced in the coming days.
