Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has said his country could develop energy cooperation with Azerbaijan, including mutual electricity exports and imports.

As reported by AZE.US, Pashinyan made the remarks at a press briefing following a Cabinet meeting on August 13.

The Armenian prime minister also confirmed that Azerbaijani specialists had visited Armenia as part of bilateral technical consultations. The meetings took place on September 5, 2025, and January 15, 2026.

According to Pashinyan, the discussions covered power transmission lines, pipelines, communication cables and the restoration of railway links.

He said Armenia’s strategic objective remains full energy independence through the expansion of solar generation and electricity storage facilities. However, that goal would not prevent the country from participating in regional energy trade.

Armenia could export electricity when it has a surplus and import it when domestic demand rises, Pashinyan said. Similar cooperation could be developed with Azerbaijan, as well as with Turkey, Iran and Georgia.

The prime minister noted that Armenia’s rapidly expanding artificial intelligence industry could significantly increase the country’s electricity consumption. Armenia, which previously had surplus generating capacity, may therefore need additional energy supplies in the future.

Pashinyan’s remarks followed an August 11 interview in which Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said Azerbaijani specialists had conducted preliminary surveys in Armenia and identified possible locations for power transmission infrastructure.

Aliyev said a project to transmit Azerbaijani electricity through Armenia to Nakhchivan had already been prepared and that construction could be completed within six months.

The latest statements indicate that Baku and Yerevan have moved beyond general political discussions and are already conducting technical work on possible regional energy links.
