Frozen lamb imported from Mongolia is being sold in Baku for 11 to 12 manats ($6.47 to $7.06) per kilogram, nearly half the price of locally produced lamb.

Fresh local lamb currently costs about 20 to 22 manats ($11.76 to $12.94) per kilogram, creating a price gap of up to 10 manats.

Sellers say the cheaper imported meat has attracted buyers looking to reduce household food costs. Customers, however, remain divided over quality.

Some shoppers said they noticed little difference in taste between local and imported lamb. Others said they still preferred freshly slaughtered local meat.

Experts attributed the lower price of Mongolian lamb to the country’s large livestock industry and higher production volumes.

They also stressed that frozen meat should not automatically be considered lower quality. Freezing is primarily used to extend shelf life after processing.

Azerbaijan’s Food Safety Agency said imported meat and meat products are classified as high-risk goods and are subject to strict safety and quality controls.

Consumers are advised to ask sellers for documents confirming the product’s origin and compliance with food safety requirements before making a purchase.
