Every summer, visitors gather at a salt lake near the Hovsan road in Baku’s Surakhani district to use local mud as a remedy for joint pain, back problems and other health complaints.
Some visitors say the mud helps with rheumatism, swelling and chronic pain. Many undergo treatment courses lasting 10 to 12 days and report temporary relief.
Doctors, however, warn that using therapeutic mud without medical supervision can be dangerous.
Before beginning such treatment, specialists say the composition of the mud and water should be assessed and the patient should undergo a medical examination. Without spinal imaging and a doctor’s evaluation, it is impossible to know whether the procedure is suitable.
Mud treatment may worsen conditions such as herniated discs, protrusions, disc sequestration, cancer and other serious illnesses.
Even when a person feels temporary improvement, that does not necessarily mean the underlying condition has improved. In some cases, heat exposure and pressure on affected areas can increase the risk of complications.
The report also raised concerns about sanitation around the lake. Visitors complained about litter despite claims that drivers are charged 1 manat at the entrance. Site representatives said the area is cleaned daily.
